Our bodies continuously change from year to year, day to day, and even from morning to afternoon to evening. One of the most notable changes is the inevitable natural shift to menopause and postmenopause.

Blood sugar imbalances affect over 100 million adults in the United States—and this number continues to rise. With symptoms of fatigue, weight fluctuations, mood swings, excessive thirst, blurred vision, increased urination, headaches, infections, nerve damage, and delayed wound healing, many people may not realize that these signs often signify blood sugar abnormalities….
Over the last several years, many people have turned to herbal medicine to boost their immune systems, treat various diseases, and restore their overall health and well-being – me being one of them. In 2022 alone, the global herbal medicine market was valued at 166 billion dollars, and it is expected to reach 348 billion dollars by 2029! This shift towards natural herbal remedies is largely due to the perception that herbal supplements are more effective and safer than their synthetic counterparts….
As someone who loves getting my hands dirty in the kitchen, I am still always looking for cleaner ingredient alternatives that not only satisfy my taste buds but also nourish my body from within. It’s amazing how a few simple swaps in our cooking choices can make a world of difference in how we feel inside and out…
Did you know chronic issues like adult acne, bloating, and excess weight gain can all be attributed to dairy? It’s true! Many clients come to me with these common ailments, and the fix is usually relatively simple: cut out (or at least back on) dairy cheese. …
Did you know that there are currently trillions of microorganisms living in your body? That’s about ten times more microorganisms than cells! And while some of these “bad” microorganisms do hold the potential to make you sick, most are considered “good” and live in the body harmoniously to provide incredible benefits for a healthy human host….
What comes to mind when you see or hear the word menopause? I know for most of my clients, menopause often provokes a gut-wrenching reaction being that it’s typically associated with uncomfortable symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, migraines, and mood fluctuations. Well, believe it or not, this inevitable stage of a woman’s life doesn’t have to be as terrible as it’s normally depicted—actually, it’s not supposed to be terrible at all….

One of the most common questions I receive from clients is: “I love sweet treats, but I know I need to cut back on sugar. What can I do?!” If you’ve wrestled with this challenge yourself, you know that finding a solution isn’t all that easy…
Many clients come to me with troubling symptoms like brain fog, dry skin, and sugar cravings. The solution to these problems is often more straightforward than they realize: drink more water!
When you sit down to eat a meal, you may think you are only nourishing yourself. Guess again! Within your body, a vast microscopic ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses inhabit your gut. Collectively, these microorganisms and their genes make up your microbiome. With over 100 trillion microbes and a thousand different species, many of my clients are surprised to learn that their guts contain more bacterial genes than human genes. This means that you are a superorganism! In fact, your unique microbiome consists of millions of genes that encode proteins that influence many bodily functions, including digestion, immunity, hormone balance, vitamin production, and detoxification….
This time of year, it’s common to make diet and fitness resolutions, but we often choose unrealistic goals that are impossible to adhere to long-term. We get discouraged and give up, berating ourselves as failures, ending up in worse shape, mentally and physically, than when we started. Instead of tackling a “whole body makeover” or demanding a “new year, new me,” why don’t we gently love ourselves through small, sustainable healthy improvements this year?…
One of the most common statements my clients tell me when beginning their health journey is: I want to eat better, but I don’t know how to start. And I get it. Changing your current diet and lifestyle can be daunting, especially when there is a plethora of options at the grocery store. Unfortunately, so many foods are advertised as “healthy” when, in reality, they lack essential nutrients or are filled with numerous additives. So much of marketing and packaging is misleading regarding the ingredients you’re purchasing to put into your body. Simply put, choosing the right foods can be confusing….
Have you ever noticed that butternut squash tends to taste better in the fall? Your taste buds aren’t deceiving you! The change of seasons makes certain produce that grows best during that season more flavorful because it’s fresher, riper, and juicier than its out-of-season counterpart. In-season produce not only tastes better, but it’s healthier for us, too. I’ve found that I feel better in my body and am more energized when I pay attention to what’s local and seasonally available at the grocery store…

Inflammation is one of those trigger words that you probably automatically associate with “bad.” But when injuries and foreign invaders are present in your body, inflammatory processes act as a defense mechanism to protect and heal you. So, in this sense, you want inflammation to occur! However, you can have “too much of a good thing,” and this idea definitely applies to inflammation….
Riddle time! Here are your hints: It is not digestible by the body, yet hardly anyone eats enough of it. It is calorie-free, yet it will make you feel satiated. It is hugely important for everything from digestion to heart health, blood sugar regulation, and beyond….
Many of my clients feel bloated after eating legumes like beans and lentils. But it’s essential to include legumes into your daily diet because they’re packed with protein and fiber, especially if you’re vegetarian or vegan. So, what is the answer? Sprouting!

One of my favorite things about being a holistic nutritionist is working with clients from all walks of life. Their symptoms, food preferences, lifestyle choices, and health goals all differ, and each of them is wonderfully unique in their own way. Getting to the root of their health problems is like a different puzzle that I am eager to solve each time I meet someone new….
Most patients (in Los Angeles) are experienced with intermittent fasting by the time they walk into our office. I find that the majority of my clients are utilizing intermittent fasting for weight loss but are unaware of the cardiovascular, cognitive benefits…
Many of my clients ask me questions about macronutrients. How much protein to eat, what sources of fat are best, or the most popular: “How should I calculate my macro ratio?” All good questions! My answer? It depends—but the first thing to remember is this: micronutrients are an equally (or arguably more) important part of your health equation. And they’re often forgotten….
Many of us plan to eat healthy in the New Year, but what does eating healthy really mean? Is it consuming specific foods in specific quantities? Eating only at certain times of day or in accordance with specific rules? Does it involve pleasure? Is the goal of healthy eating a healthy body? Healthy mind? What does that look like….
If you know me, you know how much I love juicing—every single day! It is such an easy way to consume so many incredible nutrients in one go. Juicing was one of the most powerful tools that helped me to beat cancer (and many other health ailments, too)…
If we were stranded on a desert island and only had access to ten essential foods to optimize our wellness, what would they be? Which foods would not only keep us alive but also help us avoid illness and make it easier to recover from injury, ensuring that we’re thriving when the rescue boat arrives? We asked veteran dietician, Lana Scales, MS, RD, CNSC, ACSM, EP-C to help us curate a list of the foods that make us thrive, whether we’re stuck on an island or, say, trying to stay healthy through a global pandemic….
If you frequently experience bouts of fatigue, pain, anxiety, brain fog, insomnia, irregular heartbeat, hair loss, or infections, you are not alone. Many of my clients come to me with these symptoms looking for answers they struggle to obtain elsewhere.
